Human Design is a personality and decision-making framework that maps the moment of your birth onto a chart called a bodygraph. It identifies your energy type, your inner authority, and the strategy your body actually works best under.
It was assembled in 1987 by a teacher named Ra Uru Hu, who blended astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, the Hindu chakra system, and elements of quantum physics into a single synthesis. The result is a chart that, with surprising specificity, tells you how to make decisions, when to wait, what to stop apologising for, and which version of yourself you've been forcing into someone else's design.
You don't have to believe in any of those source traditions for Human Design to be useful. You just have to find out your type and your authority, apply them for a fortnight, and notice whether the pattern matches what your body's been doing your entire life. Most people who do this stop dismissing it within a week.
This guide covers everything you need to start: how your chart is calculated, the five Human Design types, the seven authorities, your strategy and signature, and how Human Design fits with astrology and numerology when you read all three together.
What is a Human Design chart?
Your Human Design chart, called a bodygraph, is generated from three things: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. The exact time matters because some of the most important elements of the chart shift every two hours. If you don't know your birth time, ask a parent, find your birth certificate, or use astrological rectification later. Guessing won't do.
The bodygraph shows a body-shape diagram with nine energy centres (squares, triangles, and diamonds), thirty-six channels connecting them, and sixty-four gates dotted around the edges. The centres are either defined (coloured in, meaning you have consistent access to that energy) or undefined (white, meaning you take in that energy from the environment and amplify it). The channels show which centres are wired together. The gates show specific themes you have direct access to.
It looks complicated. At depth, it is. But the entry point is simple: your type, your inner authority, and your strategy. Those three elements alone, applied for a few weeks, will change how you make decisions for the rest of your life.

The five Human Design types explained
There are five Human Design types. You are one of them. There is no overlap, no in-between, no Myers-Briggs-style "I scored high on Manifestor too." You are the type your chart says you are. The percentages below are roughly the proportion of the population that shares your type.
Manifestor (around 9% of the population)
Manifestors are initiators. You don't need invitation, permission, or response to act. Your function is to start things, then inform the people who'll be affected so they're not blindsided. Manifestors are often told to "calm down" or "stop being so much" their entire lives, mostly by people who don't understand that initiating IS the Manifestor's role. Your nervous system runs hot. You'll burn out fast trying to maintain Generator pace.
Generator (around 37%)
Generators are builders. You have a sacral response — a gut-level yes or no that fires before your brain can rationalise it. Your function is to wait for something to respond TO. When you respond with a true sacral yes, the work that follows feels sustainable and energising. When you push yourself into things your sacral never agreed to, you exhaust yourself and call it discipline.
Manifesting Generator (around 33%)
A faster, more multi-passionate Generator. You can do many things at once, skip steps, change direction halfway through, and still get there. Your strategy is the same as Generator (respond, don't initiate from nothing) but you're allowed to be inconsistent in execution. Manifesting Generators are constantly told they need to focus and "stick to one thing." That advice is for Generators, not for you.
Projector (around 20%)
Projectors are guides. You see other people clearly. You can read systems, dynamics, and energy patterns that escape the people inside them. Your function is to wait for invitation before sharing what you see. The world wasn't built for unsolicited Projector wisdom. You'll exhaust yourself trying to push insight on people who didn't ask. Recognition is your currency, not output.
Reflector (around 1%)
Reflectors are mirrors. You take in the entire energetic environment around you and reflect it back. Your decisions take longer than everyone else's, because your body needs to move through a full 28-day lunar cycle before you really know. Your function is to find environments and people that feel good in your body, and to stop making big decisions on the timetable that suits Generators.

What is your Human Design authority?
Authority in Human Design is the specific mechanism in your body that knows when something is a yes and when something is a no. This is not your brain. The brain is for collecting information, not for deciding things. The "decision" comes from elsewhere, and Human Design names exactly where.
There are seven inner authorities. Yours will be one of them.
- Sacral authority. A sound or sensation in the gut. An unh-huh (yes) or unh-unh (no). Almost instant. Most Generators and Manifesting Generators have this.
- Emotional (Solar Plexus) authority. Your truth is not knowable in the moment because your emotions move in waves. You need to ride the wave, often over hours or days, before clarity arrives. Roughly half the population has emotional authority.
- Splenic authority. A primal, in-the-moment hit of yes-this or no-that. Quiet, instinctive, easy to second-guess. Common in Projectors and some Manifestors.
- Ego (Heart) authority. What your will wants. Rare, about 1% of the population. Often experienced as conviction.
- Self-Projected authority. You hear your truth when you speak it aloud to a trusted person. Common in some Projectors.
- Mental authority (also called No Inner Authority). Reflectors and a small group of Projectors. Decisions emerge through environment and conversation over time. The slowest authority. The most misunderstood.
- Lunar authority. Reflectors only. Decisions clarify over a full 28-day lunar cycle. You don't decide on Tuesday what you'll do by Friday. You wait the moon out.
The most common mistake people make is treating their brain like authority. The brain is brilliant at analysis and terrible at deciding. If you've ever made a decision that "made sense on paper" and your body resisted it the whole way, that's the mismatch.
Human Design strategy: what your body is supposed to be doing
Each Human Design type has a strategy — the action pattern your body works best inside. The strategy stops you from making decisions the wrong way for your design.
- Manifestor strategy: inform, then act. You don't ask permission. You tell the people who'll be affected what you're about to do, then you do it.
- Generator strategy: wait to respond. Don't initiate from nothing. Wait for the question, the opportunity, the song on the radio, the conversation that asks something of you. Then your sacral knows.
- Manifesting Generator strategy: respond, then inform. Like Generator, but you also need to inform people of your direction shifts. They will be sudden. They will surprise everyone.
- Projector strategy: wait for the invitation. Wait to be recognised, wait to be asked. When invited, you can share everything you see. When not invited, save your energy.
- Reflector strategy: wait a lunar cycle. For any major decision, give it a full 28 days. The world will tell you that's too slow. The world is wrong about you.
Signature and not-self theme: how you know your design is working
Each Human Design type also has a signature (what alignment feels like) and a not-self theme (what it feels like when you're forcing yourself into someone else's design).
| Type | Signature (aligned) | Not-self theme (misaligned) |
|---|---|---|
| Manifestor | Peace | Anger |
| Generator | Satisfaction | Frustration |
| Manifesting Generator | Satisfaction and peace | Frustration and anger |
| Projector | Success | Bitterness |
| Reflector | Surprise | Disappointment |
If the not-self theme of your type is the dominant emotion in your life, your design isn't broken. You're just running it like someone else's.
How Human Design fits with astrology and numerology
Human Design tells you how your body decides. Astrology tells you what the sky is doing right now and how those transits intersect with your natal chart. Numerology tells you what cycle you're in — the long arc of your life (Life Path), the chapter you're sitting inside (Personal Year), the page you're on this week (Personal Day).
Each system answers a different question. Run alone, each has blind spots. Together, the convergences are where the signal lives.
A worked example: your Human Design tells you you're a Projector who needs invitation. Your astrology tells you Saturn is currently transiting your career house, asking you to commit to a long-term structure. Your numerology says you're in a Personal Year 1 — a fresh start. Three systems pointing at the same theme: a major career decision is coming, the right one will arrive as an invitation, and the timing is structurally significant. That's a much sharper signal than any single system gives you alone.
This is the Cosmicarta thesis: three lenses, read together. The convergences are the brief.

Frequently asked questions about Human Design
Is Human Design accurate?
Human Design is a framework, not a measurement. It's "accurate" in the same sense Myers-Briggs is accurate: a useful pattern-matching tool that gives you vocabulary for things you'd otherwise struggle to name. People who find it useful tend to be the ones who test it experientially — run their type and authority for a few weeks, see whether the patterns hold. People who treat it as a metaphysical truth claim usually find it harder to work with.
Can your Human Design type change?
No. Your type is set by the moment of your birth and doesn't change throughout your life. The way you experience your type can deepen as you understand it better, but the underlying chart is fixed.
What is the rarest Human Design type?
Reflectors are the rarest type, making up around 1% of the population. They take in the energy of the environment and have a 28-day lunar cycle for major decisions.
Do I need to know my exact birth time for Human Design?
Yes. Several key elements of your chart change every two hours, including your incarnation cross and your profile lines. A guess won't do. Find your birth certificate, ask a parent, or use astrological rectification with an experienced practitioner if you genuinely can't find it.
What is the difference between Human Design and astrology?
Astrology maps planetary positions at the moment of your birth and during ongoing transits to interpret personality, timing, and life themes. Human Design uses the same planetary data but processes it through the I Ching and chakra system to create a body-based decision-making framework. Astrology answers "what does the sky say?" Human Design answers "how does your body decide?" They complement each other.
Can two people have the same Human Design chart?
Only if they're born at the exact same moment in the exact same location. Even twins born minutes apart will have different charts in some cases (different profile lines, different incarnation cross). The chart is unique enough that practical identical charts are vanishingly rare.
What is the best Human Design type?
There is no "best" type. Each type has a different function and a different energy. The "best" type for you to be is the one your chart says you are, lived correctly.
Knowing your type and authority for one month will change more about how you make decisions than ten years of self-help. The chart is not a personality test. It's a permission slip to stop pretending to be someone else's design.
